The scientific name for the humpback whale roughly translates to "big-winged New Englander," and this informative half-hour, hosted by Leslie Nielsen (Airplane!, The Naked Gun) features a slew of these gentle creatures with the "big wings," or fins. Originally aired on television, To Save a Whale is the third episode in the 13-part series The Blue Frontier. The cameras capture excellent footage of these magnificent creatures during their 4,000 mile migration from Juneau, Alaska to Hawaii. Interview clips with Dr. William Evans of the Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute offer commentary on the eating, courting, and singing habits of the humpback. And a brief history of whale hunting outlines the near disaster which confronted the humpback, which since 1966 has flourished under international protection. Although the series is some five years old, the good production values as well as the general nature of the program make it a fine choice for public library collections. Recommended. (Other titles in the series include: Underseas Eden, Vanishing Mermaids, Antarctic Adventure, and Tales from the Nursery.
