On July 25, 1992, General Colin Powell, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, dedicated a memorial in Leavenworth, KS to a little known group of Black soldiers that were called "The Buffalo Soldiers" by Native Americans in the midwest. Of the 10 regiments of the United States Cavalry assigned to keep the peace in the wild frontier during the second half of the 19th century, two of the regiments (the 9th and 10th) were comprised of Black soldiers. This is their story. Featuring the largest collection of rare photographs available of the men from the period, The Buffalo Soldiers combines maps, interviews with experts, and on-location shooting (where history was played out over 100 years ago), to create an interesting compendium of fascinating facts and lore from the period. The film also points out the unusual position of power the Buffalo Soldiers held as Black men in a deeply divisive and prejudiced country. Later these same soldiers would plant a victorious flag at San Juan Hill. The only drawback to the program (which certainly won't bother everyone) is the modern-day portrayal of a Buffalo Soldier who offers anecdotal accounts of the old days. The scenes are very slowly spoken and freighted with meaning, unlike the rest of the program which just does a darn good job of historical reportage. Inexpensive, focusing on a forgotten chapter in history, and featuring a fine speech by General Powell, The Buffalo Soldiers is recommended.
