This is not only an excellent presentation, but also the most comprehensive overview of the history of jazz on the market. Billy Taylor, who co-wrote the script, narrates, and along with the Billy Taylor Trio, demonstrates, the history of jazz from its beginnings in spiritual gospels, up through ragtime, blues, swing, prebop and bebop, afro-cuban, funky, and free jazz. Along the way, documentary footage, original recordings, and photographic stills are intercut to give an authentic feel to the narration. And all of the greats appear at least briefly: Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, and on and on...In fact, the only drawback to this program is its price. Still, we highly recommend it for school and larger public libraries. Program notes and a glossary of musical terms are included with the tape.
