The 1863 battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is to the Civil War what the Titanic is to maritime stories. No matter how often it is studied, there seems to be new nuggets of information which emerge from each effort. The producers of this 4-tape set have each been involved in other Gettysburg projects; Craig Haffner produced an Emmy award winning film on the battle, scriptwriter and director Ron Maxwell was responsible for the well-received television mini-series entitled Gettysburg, and Michael Shaara wrote the acclaimed novel The Killer Angels, considered by many to be the definite envisioning of the battle. The first two parts of the series deal with the Confederate and Union officers, respectively, and how their various combinations of bravery, foresight, hesitancy, and daring led to the eventual Union victory. Part Three tells of the Irish soldiers who fought on both sides (and the horrible prejudicial treatment they received), and the final part features an interview with author Michael Shaara. Sure to be popular, since Gettysburg is a battle that will be re-fought over and over again by armchair historians and military strategists alike, this set is priced reasonably enough to make it a good choice for schools and public libraries. Also newly available from Greystone, The Unknown Civil War: Chamberlain at Gettysburg, The Unknown Civil War: Lee at Gettysburg ($14.95 each) and Haunted Gettysburg ($19.95). Aud: H, P. (J. Carlson)
