Study after study has confirmed that owning a pet can serve as a strong tonic for improving our physical and mental health. Apparently, this holds true for the homeless as well. This documentary from the United Kingdom explores the efforts of homeless people and animal welfare organizations to ensure that the pets of the homeless have access to basic veterinary care. There are many reasons the homeless adopt pets, including physical warmth during the winter, companionship, and protection. But what about the pets? Several veterinary workers assure the audience that these dogs have fewer health problems than pedigreed dogs and by and large receive plenty of loving care from their owners. One homeless man defended pet ownership by adding that he undoubtedly saved a stray from euthanasia. Unfortunately, the production qualities don't do justice to this provocative topic. Many interviews are barely audible due to background noise. Additionally, many Americans might find the thick Cockney accents difficult to decipher. An optional purchase. Aud: C, P. (V. Elliott)
