The words of novelist Molly Keane and the poet W. B. Yeats, as voiced by Anjelica Huston, help accentuate the breath-taking majesty of these "country houses," which are really more like baronial estates. Sponsored by the Irish Georgian Society, which is responsible for the restoration and upkeep of some of these national treasures, the program's tone evokes a romantic nostalgia as we sweep past gigantic gardens, ancient castles, and the rococo opulence of Palladian architecture. Beginning with medieval Jacobian homes and tower houses, and moving through the landowner's estates to the truly enormous palaces, the exteriors and interiors of each are examined and commented upon by both expert and owner. The program looks at the relationship of building to landscape, the balance between art and nature, and the directions in design from geometry to informality. A bit of Irish history is thrown in to explain these houses' final destiny, whether destroyed by riot, fire or neglect, or turned into profitable museums, country clubs, or guest houses. Visitors to Ireland and fans of Irish lore and memorabilia will enjoy this tape, as it is evocative of the charm and loveliness of the country itself. Highly recommended. (E. Druda)
