In the seventh volume from Judy Garland's short-lived but wonderful 1963-1964 CBS television series, featuring episodes #14 and #23, the legendary entertainer is joined by singer Bobby Darin and comedian Bob Newhart for the first hour, and performs solo songs from the movies in the second. Musical highlights include Judy singing "Hello, Bluebird," "More," "Once in a Lifetime," and "The Man That Got Away," as well as a medley of train-related songs with Darin (who also performs two gospel numbers--a swinging version of "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" and the ballad "Canaan"). On the comedy side, Newhart and Garland pair up for a very funny postmodern sketch as a couch potato couple tuning in to The Judy Garland Show, sharing digs about Garland's pipes and Newhart's toupee. As I mentioned in the review of The Judy Garland Show, Vol. 5 (VL-7/01), the pristine b&w digital transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack make this look and sound better than it ever did in the mid-'60s. DVD extras include 10 outtakes/deleted scenes and a fine audio commentary by series producer Gary Smith, who has much to say until the very last moment when he tries to sum up Judy Garland ("she's just…words fail me"). Couldn't agree more. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
