Allen Mondell and Cynthia Salzman Mondell's documentary focuses on a new wave of anti-Semitism polluting Europe, as it interviews students, journalists, academicians, political activists and rabbis in Great Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Hungary, who detail a variety of incidents ranging from vile slurs to physical assaults and property vandalism against European Jews. The Monster Among Us ties the increase in anti-Semitism to the rising number of European immigrants from Islamic countries, who use the Israeli-Palestinian conflict together with inflammatory exhortations by radical imams in order to justify their actions. Unfortunately, while the stories of individual attacks are both alarming and compelling, the film never provides statistics on the actual level of anti-Semitic hate crimes in the various European countries, and while it insists that the BBC's coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has inflamed the situation, no examples are shown. Nonetheless, The Monster Among Us provides a chilling reminder that anti-Semitism is, unfortunately, still very much alive in Europe. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (P. Hall)
