Offering a concise history of this country of 7,000 islands, this program looks at a nation of twenty-three tribal groups: the descendants of Asians and Pacific islanders who migrated to the archipelago 9,000 years ago, as well as the progeny of later Islamic traders from the west and Christian explorers from the east. The U.S. "purchased" the nation after the Spanish-American War, and despite a war fought against the U.S. by Filipinos, the islands remained a U.S. territory until 1946. The blending of cultures and ethnicities has produced a rich variety of holidays, rituals, and folk beliefs, and while many videos about foreign countries include cultural information only as a kind of footnote, this excellent title offers some pretty interesting detail (the faint of stomach may find the viewing of the "psychic surgeon" a little overwhelming--sure looked like real blood to me). For the tourist-minded, there is enough information on beautiful beaches, dramatic mountains, historic mansions and interesting cities to inspire a visit. However, this video is not afraid to include the less picturesque elements of society, such as the unfortunate people who live and scavenge in the dumps of Manila. Because this is so much more than a travelogue, this tape recommends itself to educational as well as public library settings. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (R. Reagan)
