During WWII the clash between the totalitarian states of fascist Germany and Soviet Russia pushed warfare to unparalleled heights of savagery. This was total war and surrender on either side was rarely an option. 1943 was the turning point and beginning of the end for the Nazis on the eastern front. Waves of tenacious Russian soldiers, partisans, and several brutal winters turned the tide against Germany. So many Nazi divisions were decimated that by the time Russian soldiers reached Berlin, the once mighty Third Reich capitol was largely defended by boys and old men. This is a three part examination of the conflict which set the uneasy tone of the Cold War which dominated much of the rest of the century. The previewed video, Breakout to Berlin (Pt. 3), covers the war from the siege of Stalingrad to the fall of Berlin. The video gives a good explanation of weapons, tactics, and personalities, set against the larger picture of cruelty, fanatical bravery, and political intrigue. The war footage is compelling if inevitably repetitious, the narration sometimes overly dramatic, and the music is inappropriate. In spite of these flaws, however, the series is recommended for viewers with a strong interest in military history. The other volumes in the set are: The Politics of Fear and The Killing Ground. Aud: H, C, P. (S. Rees)
