With the exception of the Great Pyramid at Giza, the seven wonders of the ancients world, as chronicled by Philo of Byzantium some 2,000 years ago, have long ceased to exist--destroyed either by the forces of nature or from human defacement. This interesting documentary recreates those ancient splendors, telling what is known of their construction and history, as well as the stories of the modern explorers who uncovered evidence to prove their existence. In addition to the Great Pyramid, the program covers the Hanging Gardens at Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesos, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Pharos (lighthouse) at Alexandria. Good photography and detailed narration combine to make this program a pleasant viewing experience. The only quibble we had was with the occasional tendency of the narrator to sound like the later Orson Welles at his most supernaturally melodramatic. Aside from this, we recommend this title for general collections. (Available from most distributors.)
