One can hardly argue with the purpose behind Jerry Krell's Three Faiths, One God, which emphasizes the common roots and shared beliefs of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—a subject of enormous importance in the post-9/11 world. In fact, the goal of increasing understanding and respect within what's called the Abrahamic faith community, and in particular of demonstrating the similarities between Muslim belief and practice on the one hand and the Judeo-Christian tradition on the other, is clearly one of great urgency in the often hostile climate of contemporary sociopolitical debate. The two-hour documentary does a fine, if somewhat repetitive, job of showing the links—historical and ritualistic—among the three faiths, and especially between Judaism and Islam, mostly through interviews with experts from each group (complemented by footage illustrating specific but associated forms of prayer and ceremonies), backed by comments from various believers. Differences among the faiths and the many conflicts that have arisen over the centuries are also mentioned, though much less prominently, as the emphasis here is on common elements and cooperation. In the present environment, such reconciliation is clearly a noble endeavor, and this solid film can serve a useful educational purpose to that end. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (F. Swietek)
