All phenoms aren't teenage tennis stars: take a gander at Eva Zeisel as she strides across the exhibition gallery--elegantly attired, vibrant and engaged, signing autographs and discussing her work, at the sprightly age of 97! An icon of the industrial design world, Zeisel, who creates pottery notable for its combination of beauty, utility, and affordability, has had a one-woman show at the Museum of Modern Art, had her work solicited by the British Museum, and has supervised reproductions to be sold by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This first in a documentary film series exploring the lives of women aged 85-plus who are still actively engaged in creative lives sets a high standard for subsequent entries, combining family photos, archival footage, interviews, and Zeisel's own reminiscences to trace the artist's career from Budapest to Berlin to Moscow (where she was imprisoned for 16 months) to Vienna and the United States, where her work has flourished since the 1940s (and continues today, as she explores new avenues of creativity: furniture design and artistic tile). A skillful portrait of an incredible woman that effectively captures her zest, strength, and curiosity, filmmaker Jyll Johnstone's Throwing Curves is recommended. Aud: C, P. (J. Reed)
