Winner of a Special Merit Award at the Earthpeace International Film Festival, Tibet in Exile tells the story of the thousand-plus Tibetans who escape each year to join their exiled leader, the Dalai Lama, in India. Following a brief historical overview which covers the Chinese takeover of Tibet in 1949, and the Dalai Lama's retreat a decade later, the video examines the journey of 10 children to Dharmsala, India, where they will join the 120,000 Tibetans already in exile. Since 1949, it is estimated that over a million Tibetan citizens have died and over 6,000 monasteries have been destroyed by the Chinese. While political terrorism reigns in their homeland (a situation virtually ignored by the rest of the world), Tibetans struggle to maintain their Buddhist roots and their cultural traditions in foreign lands (India, Nepal) where the goals of providing education and health are often thwarted due to overflowing facilities. A powerful documentary about a tragic situation, Tibet in Exile is highly recommended. (See FUELING THE FUTURE: RUNNING ON EMPTY for availability.)
