In these days of color-coded security alerts, when duct tape and plastic sheeting are prized possessions, this program from the four-volume series Terrorism in Our World couldn't be more timely. Understanding Terrorism takes a comprehensive look at the motivations, strategies, targets, and effects of terrorism, which is defined here as the calculated use or threat of violence to achieve a specific goal, and can come from above (as when a government oppresses its own citizens), or below (as when an individual or group uses terror to further an agenda). In addressing current topics, Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda are profiled (interestingly, Saddam Hussein is never specifically mentioned; however, he is shown several times, always followed by an image of Hitler), but even with the Arabic emphasis, the program is careful to point out that terrorists cannot be defined by any religious or ethnic stereotype. Built around a well-organized script, the program combines archival film with contemporary video footage that--while not sensational--is realistic and therefore contains some disturbing images (i.e., the Holocaust, destruction of the World Trade Center, beatings, and bloody carnage). Recommended. [Note: the other titles in the series, available at the same price, are Terrorism & the U.S., A History of Terrorism, and Preventing Terrorism.] Aud: J, H, P. (E. Gieschen)
