Separated today by a few hundred yards of clear Pacific ocean, one is a mighty ship (that ironically never fired a single shot in wartime) that has come to represent the worst naval disaster in U.S. history, while the other (a weary veteran of several wars) was the site of an event that forever changed the balance of global power. OnDeck Home Entertainment's USS Arizona to USS Missouri: From Tragedy to Victory is a solid military-themed documentary chronicling the story of two of the mightiest dreadnaughts ever created. Drawing on footage shot on board both the USS Arizona and the USS Missouri (the ships were constructed along the lines of the battleship USS Iowa, hence the state names), the program vividly portrays the role each ship played during much of the 20th century's history of warfare. While battleships have largely been replaced by aircraft carriers, the Missouri's history (site of Japan's unconditional surrender) will always be remembered, while the memorial commemorating the Arizona, which lies a few feet beneath the entrance to Pearl Harbor, has become the most visited site in Hawaii. While one signifies defeat, and the other victory, both ships have earned a cherished place in American history, and this program offers a fitting tribute. Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Carlson)
