Vietnam seems like the never-ending war, and, sadly, most Americans have become tired of hearing about it. That's what makes this particular video difficult to assess. While it graphically describes the combat experience as seen through the eyes of the interviewed veterans, it's nothing we haven't seen or heard before. Vietnam has been explored in countless movies and videos, and even though the Wall in Washington D.C. has done a lot to heal wounds, this conflict remains disturbing as well as hard to explain to a new generation. It was the longest war in America's history and the only one we ever lost, but the most damaging effects were on the soldiers who came home haunted by memories of unspeakable horrors. Newspaper accounts of men committing terrible crimes attributed to post-traumatic stress syndrome brought on by their experiences in Vietnam are constant reminders of what this conflict did to the psyche of America. While this doesn't compare to such mainstays as Vietnam: A Television History (VL-11/87), Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam and Vietnam: The Soldier's Story (VL-11/98), larger subject collections will surely want to add this title. Optional elsewhere. Aud: P. (J. Carlson)
