Roger Tory Peterson, famous birdwatcher and author of the Peterson Field Guides, takes viewers on a colorful journey through the world of birds and watching birds. Although this program doesn't do much more than scratch the surface of the ornithologist's world (there are over 9,000 known species, ranging in size from the hummingbird to the ostrich), it offers a number of general pointers (bring binoculars, a field guide, and, if possible a knowledgeable friend on birdwatching expeditions), as well as a detailed look at the sights and sounds of 52 common and backyard birds. Peterson also discusses the characteristics that birdwatchers focus on: size, shape, bill type, tail, wings, and behavior; and points out that normally two or three characteristics will be enough to make a solid identification. Breathtaking photography, sound advice, and the perennial popularity of the subject, make Watching Birds an excellent choice for libraries. Highly recommended.
