Demián Bichir delivers a powerhouse performance in this poignant father-son drama set in East Los Angeles. Carlos Galindo (Bichir), a hard-working single dad, is an illegal Mexican immigrant, but his sullen 14-year-old son Luis (José Julián) was born in the United States and is therefore entitled to citizenship. Earning a paltry salary as part of a landscaping crew, Carlos sees an opportunity when his boss offers to sell him a battered old truck. “You're not just buying a truck,” he's told. “You're buying the American Dream.” Being undocumented, Carlos cannot obtain a driver's license, so he drives extra careful in order to avoid attention and possible deportation. But when a day laborer steals the vehicle, Carlos has no choice but to set off in pursuit, with Luis at his side. In their quest to retrieve what's rightfully theirs, father and son not only struggle to overcome many obstacles thrown in their path, but also wind up learning more about each other. Sensitively directed by Chris Weitz, A Better Life is a sincere and compassionate drama that helps illuminate the contemporary immigrant experience. Highly recommended. [Note: DVD/Blu-ray extras include audio commentary by director Chris Weitz, deleted scenes (5 min.), and the music video “Jardinero” by Ozomatli. Bottom line: a decent extras package for a fine film.] (S. Granger)
