And now for something slightly more contemporary from producer Ismail Merchant and director James Ivory, creators of Room With a View, Howard's End and Remains of the Day. Based on the autobiographical novel by Kaylie Jones, this rich coming-of-age drama is impeccably acted by Kris Kristofferson as expatriate author Bill Willis (modeled on Jones's own father James, who wrote The Thin Red Line), Barbara Hershey as his outspoken wife, Jesse Bradford as their adopted son Billy and especially Helen Hunt-lookalike Leelee Sobieski, as Channe, who becomes increasingly alienated after Bill's health problems compels the family to move from Paris back home to North Carolina. This is the best and most resonant Merchant-Ivory production in years. Highly recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
