Well, shiver me timbers. Is this an inauspicious opening to the 1990s or what? It's bad enough that grown adults pressed for time have to tell a little box that they'd like a McD.L.T. for lunch. But having Ronald and Co. invade our world literature is more McBull than I, for one, am prepared to swallow. After a brief framing device which allows Ronald, Hamburglar, Grimace and Birdy to enter the pages of Treasure Island, the team ends up on the "Hispaniola", where they meet the cabin boy Jim Hawkins and the parrot-carrying pirate Long John Silver. The intricate relationship between Hawkins and Silver which make the 1934 MGM version and the 1950 Disney version so exciting is, of course, gutted. In its place, we are given Ronald the clown's tricks with scarves up his sleeve (a paltry substitute, needless to say). They do go to Treasure Island. They do meet Ben Gunn. And they do overturn the pirates. But the ambience (as well as 3/4ths of the story) is gone. The cover art has the audacious McNuggets to claim that in this video a "classic story comes alive!" Comes alive, my McButt. Not recommended. (Available from most distributors.)
