This film states its intention quite clearly; “Revenge corrupts even the most pure.” When he learns that his father has been murdered by corrupt politicians, Manuel Delavida (Carlos Guerrero) expertly hatches a plot for revenge. Using FBI agent-turned-bodyguard David Ross (David Yuzuk) as his main weapon, Manuel seeks to bring corrupt politician and drug kingpin John Casternoble (Alex Teixeira) to his knees.
What follows is a bloodbath as Manuel manipulates events according to his own plans, keeping several steps ahead of his targets as he wages guerilla-style war on the organization that killed his father.
Mixing horror elements and noir themes, Amidst the Devil’s Wings tells a compelling and violent story of revenge. While some of the film’s storytelling devices result in confusion, most of the time it is a fun and compelling watch. Patrons who love gritty action movies will love many of the gunfight sequences and David Ross’ grit and determination as he commits crime after crime to save his kidnapped family.
The time-jumping aspects may leave many viewers confused about some characters’ names or motivations, but the film becomes linear soon after it begins. Being a prequel, perhaps we are supposed to know some of these characters already, but as a stand-alone action film, it can be lacking in characterization.
These complaints aside, the action is fantastic. The plotline is gritty, edging towards poetry at times as Manuel pens a letter in which he debates his own worth as a son and a man. His contemplation about what makes a man a monster will be of interest to many crime drama fans.
Amidst the Devil’s Wings is a story of revenge that leaves a trail of bodies and ends in sorrow. The film doesn’t always make perfect sense, but it’s fun enough that most viewers will keep watching instead of dwelling on their confusion. Highly Recommended.
