Winner of 7 Australian Film Institute awards, writer/director Michael Rymer's powerful drama about a pair of schizophrenic lovers who try to make it on their own rises well above its melodramatic trappings to deliver both a moving love story and a gut-wrenching human drama. John Lynch and Jacqueline Mackenzie shine as Harry and Kate, a couple who hear voices and base their personal life decisions on the mottoes and quotes uncovered in Wheel of Fortune. Although initially able to make a solid and smolderingly romantic go of it, the lovers increasingly falter as their escalating adult responsibilities pull them further into the real (pressure-cooker) world. A heartfelt gem, with angelic performances from Lynch and Mackenzie, this is highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
