Critics, for the most part, scoffed, and audiences virtually fled, but the object of their respective vitriol and indifference is actually one of the most demented and inspired major-studio pictures in recent memory, crammed with eye-popping production design and inspired set-pieces. Trouble is, it's also one of the flabbiest, as one terrific scene after another continues wowing you several minutes after it ought to have taken its bows and made way for the next act. (One notable exception is the bungee-jumping climax, which is dire throughout.) The original Babe, for all of its gentle pleasures, struck me as an overrated trifle; this urban-nightmare sequel, on the other hand, with some judicious editing and a boffo finale, could've been the movie of the year. (Ignore those who carp that it's too grim for young children, unless you also believe that toddlers should be shielded from the likes of "Hansel and Gretel" and "Little Red Riding Hood.") It's an optional purchase, ultimately, but also much more worthwhile than its reputation would suggest. (M. D'Angelo)
