Victor Herbert's operetta was filmed in 1934 with Laurel and Hardy, in 1961 by Disney with Annette Funicello, and in 1986 with (gag me) Drew Barrymore and Keanu Reeves. Purists may carp with the liberties taken with the story here, but children will recognize the Mother Goose characters and wish they lived in Toyland, the animation sets a new artistic standard for the burgeoning produced-for-video market, and the voice cast (Charles Nelson Reilly as Humpty Dumpty, Christopher Plummer as the evil Barnaby, and James Belushi as one of his clueless goons) is excellent. Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)[DVD Review--November 16, 2004--MGM, 74 min., G, $14.95--Making its debut on DVD, 1997's Babes in Toyland is presented in a solid digital full screen transfer with Dolby Digital stereo sound and no extras beyond the original trailer. Bottom line: a decent children's film, this is still recommended.]
