Two Brazilian families, circa 1910, are locked in a generations-long blood feud over land each harvests for sugar cane. Told from the viewpoint of young Pacu, who next stands to lose his beloved older brother Tonho to the senseless cycle of retribution, this simple tale exudes a heavy air of tragic destiny. Once the last victim's bloodstained shirt turns yellow under the sun--signifying the end of a temporary truce--Tonho will have to start watching his back. Meanwhile, the marked man enjoys a dalliance with a beautiful woman who offers him some hope of escape from his fate. Although not in the same league with his superior Central Station, director Walter Salles' handsomely shot Behind the Sun warrants serious consideration. A strong optional purchase. (T. Rich)
