Known to have laughed only once in his life (when asked what possible use geometry might have), Sir Isaac Newton laid the foundation for the model of the mechanical universe, discovered calculus (which, and I say this in remembrance of high school, he could have skipped), and invented the reflecting telescope, among many other notable accomplishments. He also ruled the scientific Royal Society in his day with something like an iron fist, ruining more than a few careers. A penetrating look at a 17th century genius who wasn't a particularly nice guy (for more about Newton and the period, see Dava Sobel's excellent surprise bestseller Longitude). Highly recommended. Other new titles in the Biography series include: The Astors, Amelia Earhart, Howard Stern, Leonard Nimoy, and Buffalo Bill. Aud: J, H, C, P. (R. Pitman)
