The heroine of this anime offering, originally broadcast on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, is Saya Otonashi, a high school student who lives with her adopted family in Okinawa. Except for a strange case of selective amnesia (she can't remember anything from the past year), there is nothing unusual about Saya's life. But that changes on a fateful afternoon, when a seemingly benign walk home from school is interrupted by a vampiric monster attack, which is foiled by a mysterious man who gives Saya a katana sword to protect herself in the future. As the title of this series suggests, more blood will be spilled before Saya begins to find answers to her growing skein of questions: Who are these vampiric monsters? Who was that mysterious man who saved her life? What happened during the year that Saya can't remember? Anime fans will recognize this series' relation to Blood: The Last Vampire (VL-3/02), which shares the same Okinawan location and name of the monsters (chiroptera). Compiling the first five episodes on a dual-language disc, not rated but suitable for 16-up, this first helping of Blood+ serves up enough action, gore, and deep dark secrets to hook viewers. Recommended. [Note: Blood+: Vol. Two is slated for release on June 17, and the first five volumes are currently available in the six-disc boxed set Blood+: Part One, priced at $119.95.] Aud: P. (P.
