Many threatened to leave the U.S. if George W. Bush won a second term as President in 2004, but here's someone who actually does—sort of. At 28, John Logue (Breckin Meyer) is the kind of Democrat that conservatives love to hate: a smug, Volvo-driving, blog-writing, politically correct vegetarian who's volunteering for John Kerry. Convinced that his man will defeat the "evil, war-mongering, corrupt moron" incumbent, Logue vows to move to Canada if Bush wins again. But only after Logue loses his job and girlfriend (and grows tired of hearing his friends' taunts about making good on his "political statement") does he finally leave San Francisco and head north (it helps that a woman has urged him to move to Winnipeg, where he'll easily find a bride and thus ensure his Canadian citizenship). Looking for someone to share his traveling expenses, Logue hooks up with Chloe (former Oscar-winner Anna Paquin, who also executive produced), a free spirit who is, as they say, more than she seems. What follows—family issues, revealed secrets, and a combination of misunderstandings and full-blown arguments—is thoroughly predictable. The question is: even if we know where this road trip is going, will we enjoy the ride? With writer-director Marshall Lewy's Blue State the answer is a conditional yes, making this a strong optional purchase. [DVD extras include an audio commentary by Lewy. Bottom line: a small extras package for a so-so film.] (S. Graham)
