Headstrong women in period-piece soap opera dramas are all the rage right now and this well-intentioned mini-series set in 1895 England is no exception. Eleanor Bramwell is a sassy young doctor who must weather a hostile male-dominated medical profession, test the restricting norms of a Victorian society and single-handedly save the world while trying to squeak out a little time for her own personal fulfillment. Sounds like most of us--yes? This excellently filmed program means well, and tries to be a role-model for young women, but it's hard to have compassion for a character who is more perfect than Mary Poppins. Still, this is sure to be popular and is therefore recommended. Aud: P. (N. Plympton)
