Offering about as much realism as The Hobbit, director John Woo's (The Killer) latest Hollywood effort pits John Travolta as a pretty mean sky pilot who gets on fellow aviator Christian Slater's bad side when he steals a pair of nuclear birds. Not surprisingly, the U.S. government is not altogether pleased with the volatile situation either and they offer cursory backup. But this is mostly a high-tech Western: in the desert, with only their jeeps and their massive firepower to console them the two boys continually run into each other and set off an impressive--but entirely predictable--series of fireworks/stunt action sequences that carry the audience home. This arrow may be broken critically, but it hit the target at the boxoffice to the tune of over $70 million, and will do well on video. An optional purchase.
