Winner of the Best of Fest at the Barcelona Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, Butch Camp is a high camp romantic comedy. Our hero, Matt Grabowski (Paul Denniston), is a gay bank loan officer whose life is crumbling before his eyes. His lover betrayed him, his roommate stole all his furniture, his job at the bank is driving him insane and he's a walking target for gay bashers in his Chicago neighborhood. The coup de grace, a chaotic sexual encounter with a ravenous woman in a jacuzzi, has his friends asking if he's a closet heterosexual. Grabowski enrolls in Butch Camp, an absurd boot camp run by Sam Rottweiler (the bizarre Judy Tenuta), where he hopes to get a clue on how to maintain his composure and dignity in a homophobic world. Although the film suffers from a few adolescent moments, it's also quite funny. Director Alessandro de Gaetano's portrayal of the straight world is often no more loony than his take on the gay scene; his stereotypes work both sides of the street. Surprisingly, in the midst of Grabowski's angst, an actual love story emerges and proves to be the real hook of the story. Recommended. (P. Van Vleck)
