Rich period piece set in turn of the century London follows the fortunes (in love and work) of a young doctor (Clive Owen) at a private research institute. Falling under the honored tutelage of the director (Charles Dance) and into the arms of a comely lab assistant (Miranda Richardson), the doctor eventually discovers that there's more to the institute than meets the eye. What begins as a beautifully detailed portrait of a young man embarking on his professional career eventually becomes an intriguing mystery about social Darwinism taken to monstrous lengths. (R. Pitman)
