Needless to say, no 23-minute film could adequately cover the complexity of modern China. However, as a brief introduction to post-Mao China, China Today, which travels around the vast country to highlight the addition of Hong Kong, the expansion of Shanghai, and the curious mixture of old traditions and new ideas that are found in varying degrees in rural and metropolitan areas, should be of use in junior and senior high social studies and/or history curriculums. Given that contemporary politics, religious freedom, Tibet, military expansion, Taiwan, and U.S. relations are either fleetingly mentioned or left out altogether, this handsomely photographed overview is suitable only as an introduction that will hopefully stimulate students to investigate further.
