Irresponsible, unreliable, debt-riddled David Wozniak (Vince Vaughn) can't seem to get his life in order, much to the dismay of his Polish father (Andrzej Blumenfeld), butcher brother (Bobby Moynihan), and long-time girlfriend Emma (Cobie Smulders), who tells him she's pregnant. Excited to be a father, David confides in his beleaguered buddy/lawyer Brett (Chris Pratt), who cautions him that parenthood is not going to be easy. Simultaneously, David learns about a disastrous error at the defunct fertility clinic where he frequently donated sperm-for-cash 20 years ago. Despite his having signed an ironclad anonymity/confidentiality agreement, the 533 offspring he sired under the pseudonym “Starbuck” are now demanding to know the identity of their biological father. Curious about the 142 petitioners in this class-action lawsuit, David surreptitiously tracks down some of the plaintiffs—his now-grown children—including a professional basketball player, wannabe actor, street-singer, drug addict, YMCA lifeguard, vegan hipster, and special needs youngster. Based on the French-Canadian film Starbuck, director Ken Scott's Delivery Man is admittedly predictable and contrived, but also chockfull of comedic opportunity and heartfelt emotional involvement, which Vaughn plays to the hilt—employing every bit of his innocuous slacker charm. An amusing, compassionate celebration of an unconventional family, this is recommended, overall. [Note: DVD/Blu-ray extras include a “Building Family” cast featurette (16 min.), bloopers (5 min.), “Vince Vaughn: Off the Cuff” improv segments (5 min.), a deleted scene (2 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: a fine extras package for an obvious but nevertheless entertaining crowd-pleaser.] (S. Granger)
