Ginger Baker, eat your heart out. Master drummer Doudou N'Diaye Rose, backed by about 50 men and women on drums and inspired chanting vocals, kicks out the jams, so to speak, in this colorful music video shot on the island of Gorèe, off the coast of Daklar, the capital of Senegal. Two performances, day and night, are filmed, with footage intercut of the island and its inhabitants. A coda, with Doudou in the recording studio doing postproduction work on the music video is a beautifully edited section, as we watch his fingers wag to every beat of the multifaceted drumming on the soundtrack. Although a little on the pricey side for a music video (especially since the actual narration is limited to the opening minute or two), this is still recommended for larger music collections who can afford what is essentially a very lovely dance between sound and image. Recommended. Aud: J, H, C, P. (R. Pitman)
