Tom Hulce and Ray Liotta are excellent as the two title characters in director Robert Young's story of an autistic man, who received a blow to the head in a childhood accident, and his brother. Hulce (Amadeus) is Dominick (Nicky), helper on a garbage truck, friend to young kids, and devoted admirer of the Incredible Hulk. It is the carefully saved money from his job that is putting his older brother Eugene through medical school. Into this routine existence steps Jamie Lee Curtis, another med student, whom Nicky perceives as a threat. Goaded on by his garbage truck co-worker (Todd Graff, Five Corners, in yet another impressive supporting performance), Nicky asserts his independence, drifting away from his anchor-Eugene. The two brothers come together again when Nicky witnesses a horrifying act of violence that propels him to take action-action that ultimately reveals the truth about Nicky's childhood. Dominick & Eugene skirts dangerously close to melodrama during the second half of the film, but is saved by the outstanding acting of all the principals - as well as the final revelation which quite convincingly ties up the psychological loose ends which have been dangling throughout the film. Not a big boxoffice draw, this emotionally gripping drama should garner a larger audience on video. Highly recommended.
