Dreamfield: The Field of Dreams Story
In 1989, Kevin Costner starred in a modest hit film called Field of Dreams, and gave the English language a new pop phrase for its expanding lexicon: "If you build it, they will come." These words, spoken in the film by James Earl Jones, the basso profundo-voiced actor who also narrates this video, have proven to be strangely prophetic. By the thousands people do come to a real field constructed in a Dyersville, Iowa cornfield. They come for a variety of reasons, but no one seems to be able to understand what draws them. Some look upon it as a chance to step back into a more innocent time; others see it as an opportunity to regain some of the euphoria they felt as a child. The sight of baseball players emerging wraith-like from the cornfield (the home team is named the "Ghosts") evokes a time when baseball was played for fun, not profit, and fans rooted for, not booed, the players. This is a sweet, gentle film that may be beyond the budgets of some libraries, but if there's room for a video that's just plain enjoyable to watch, consider this one. Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Carlson)
