An Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film, Elling is an odd couple comedy about two institutionalized men suddenly compelled to make it on their own in the real world: Elling, who is fussy and neurotic, and his roommate, Kjell Bjarne, an "orangutan," who talks graphically about sex, but, alas, has never actually experienced any. In classic Felix and Oscar tradition, the men try the patience of their social worker (and, of course, each other), but gradually their cloistered worlds begin to open, as Bjarne attracts the attention of a pregnant neighbor, and Elling, beginning to fancy himself a poet, starts attending readings. A refreshingly deadpan comedy, free of cloying sentiment (heaven help us if Penny Marshall directs the inevitable Hollywood remake), this is recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
