Although the basic plot--a mother kidnapping her children--sounds like a made-for-TV movie, French director Nicole Garcia has created a powerful film peopled with rich, complex characters. A once-popular actress and divorced mother (Nathalie Baye) decides to give parenting another shot. Against her ex-husband's will, she takes off with her two children, selling her jewelry to buy motel rooms and food. Garcia paints a heartbreaking picture of a woman who loves her children, but is too free-spirited for the commitment of motherhood. Her young son is more responsible than she is, and his silent resentment pierces the air between them. Intimate and revealing, Every Other Weekend is about as real as it gets. Highly recommended. (L.
