Sally Field plays another self-righteous angry woman in this John Schlesinger thriller/polemic. When her daughter is viciously raped and murdered and her killer (Kiefer Sutherland) walks free due to a legal glitch, Karen McCann (Field) decides a là Charles Bronson in Death Wish to take the law--i.e., a loaded weapon--into her own hands. As in similar fare there are a few cheap thrills to be had at the gut level of barbaric revenge (as in "an eye for an eye"), but the plotting is about as plausible as your having Elvis over for dinner tonight. A blind treatment of a subject that's truly worth looking at. Not recommended.
