I was not a personal fan of Gilbert & Sullivan's music prior to watching this large-scale production of their greatest hits by the D'oyly Carte Singers and a 1,000 member choir. I'm still not. But that doesn't mean that some folks won't enjoy this colorful evening of light opera selections. With actors playing Gilbert & Sullivan themselves reminiscing about each of their operas, the program offers highlights from The Pirates of Penzance ("I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General," "When a Felon's Not Engaged in His Employment," etc.), H.M.S. Pinafore ("My Gallant Crew, Good Morning," "When I Was a Lad"), Iolanthe ("When Britain Really Ruled the Waves"), The Gondoliers ("Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes"), and The Mikado ("A Wandering Minstrel I," "For He's Gone and Married Yum-Yum"). Presented in sparkling Hi-Fi Stereo, Gilbert & Sullivan: Their Greatest Hits is recommended. (See CHILD DEVELOPMENT: THE FIRST TWO YEARS for availability.)
