Not as laid back as Roger Moore and not as intense as Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan makes an auspicious debut as Bond, James Bond in the 17th entry of the longest-running and most profitable cinematic franchise. Some of the banter falls flat and the villain isn't world class, but there's more than enough trademark Bonded action to leave fans shaken and stirred. As Xenia Onatopp, the woman whose literally breathtaking legs are lethal weapons, Famke Janssen is the best bad Bond girl since Barbara Carerra. And for old time's sake, Desmond Lllewelyn is back as Q. Recommended. (K. Benson)
