An excellent sleeper that originally aired on Showtime, this dead-on-target satire based on a Kurt Vonnegut short story stars Sean Astin as a very smart boy in the year 2053. Problem is that the PC-police have created the perfect egalitarian state--everyone strives to be average (in fact, getting an A on a test is as bad as receiving an F; the best students get C's). The President-a beer-swilling, foulmouthed, former steel worker, is chosen at random; great dancers have sandbags strapped to their legs to compensate for their exceptional talent; and everyone wears electrical headbands which are adjusted to make all Americans' brainwaves on a par with Homer Simpson's. Chilling, funny, and very disturbing. (R. Pitman)
