In this “original video animation” (OVA) follow-up to the anime series, Jing, a young man also known as the King of Bandits, ends up in the feared and renowned Seventh Heaven prison with his bird sidekick Kir. Of course, Jing arrives with a purpose, namely to meet the magician Campari and steal his valuable dream orb, which is capable of pilfering and actualizing the dreams of others. When Jing and Kir themselves become trapped in the trippy dream world, they are able to journey into Jing's past, and—more importantly—Campari's history, which offers clues about why Campari seems so obsessed with grief and revenge. In the tradition of earlier Jing entries, a beautiful woman appears to lend aid and provide a target for Kir's affection, while Jing himself remains tricky as ever, but not entirely without morals. Boasting fluid and appropriately surreal animation, this OVA—based on the fourth volume of the manga series—appears five years after the last anime episode, but stands on its own merit. Presented on a dual-language disc, rated TV-PG, this is recommended. Aud: P. (L. Martincik)
