Jane Fonda earned an Academy Award for her performance as Bree, a cynical New York call girl who is approached by John Klute (Donald Sutherland), a small-town detective working out of his territory trying to resolve a missing persons case. Suspecting that Bree may have been servicing his quarry, Klute enlists her aid, with the pair eventually developing a relationship that Bree is unable to consummate (emotionally). Alan J. Pakula's absorbing 1971 character study gradually builds toward a quietly gripping finale as Klute and Bree become aware that she's being stalked by a psychopath, somehow associated with the man Klute is investigating. Presented in anamorphic widescreen, the disc sports a solid transfer with serviceable Dolby Digital mono sound, and a brief "making of" shot on location in New York during the film's production. Highly recommended. (R. Extras include archival interviews with director Alan J. Pakula and star Jane Fonda (66 min.), an interview with Jane Fonda and actor Illeana Douglas (36 min.), 'The Look of Klute' behind-the-scenes featurette (26 min.), a segment on Pakula by filmmaker Matthew Miele (18 min.), a 'Klute in New York' featurette (9 min.), and a booklet featuring an essay by critic Mark Harris and excerpts from a 1972 interview with Pakula. Bottom line: this contemporary classic featuring an Oscar-winning performance by Fonda sparkles on Blu-ray.]
