La Cambiale di Matrimonio, Gioachino Rossini's very first professional opera (staged in 1810), illustrates that even at a tender age (merely 18) the composer was already a master capable of producing charming, effervescent melodies in the emerging bel canto style. The one-act comedy is set in motion when an English merchant arranges a profitable match for his daughter with a wealthy American named Slook. Unfortunately, she's in love with an impoverished young fellow, and together the pair attempt to scare off the foreigner. But Slook, originally thought to be a buffoon, not only willingly steps aside but also helps to secure the blustery merchant's assent to the lovers' union. Although the plot is admittedly slim, it still provides ample opportunity for the composer to show off his gifts with a winning assortment of solo and ensemble highlights. Filmed at the 2006 Rossini Festival in Pesaro, this production boasts colorful staging that nicely conveys the piece's comic potential, coupled with solid camerawork and sound (in Dolby Digital 5.0, DTS, and stereo). However, the orchestra is more notable for its energy than its finesse, while the singing is mostly of a provincial quality (with the lead soprano in particular emitting some piercing high notes). All in all, this is a competent if undistinguished rendering, but given the fact that this particular Rossini opera is a rarity, it should be considered a strong optional purchase. Aud: C, P. (F.
