Goofy college student Galan's action daydreams turn real when a princess gives him an authentic samurai sword and enlists his aid in this splashy animated combination of techno music and frenetic slapstick. Labyrinth of Flames' high concept, lingerie-festooned celebration of warriorship is more intentionally humorous than the norm, lampooning anime conventions even while excelling at same. The fast pace of the samurai-ing, pratfalls and gags combined with light soft-porn makes for an entertaining, if ribald, hour (make no mistake about the up-the-miniskirt shots and sexual innuendo--there's a bunch of it, but think of this as a soft "R" Betty Boop in vivid color). DVD extras include an art gallery, character sketches, a profile of director Katsuhiko Nishijima, and a behind-the-scenes featurette. A relatively fresh presentation sporting a modicum of attitude and first rate artwork, this zany samurai adventure is recommended.
