You don't absolutely have to be a redneck to like Larry the Cable Guy (although, as the saying goes, it sure helps), but this silly star vehicle is likely to only satisfy those who truly enjoy his blue collar brand of humor. Larry (whose real name is Dan Whitney) trades his undemanding cable job here for an equally cushy position as a health inspector, allowing him to patronize his favorite greasy spoons while checking for violations. But a spate of food poisonings in the area's swankier restaurants has Larry's boss all worked up, and the comic finds himself saddled with an uptight rookie (Iris Bahr) while investigating a sexy restaurateur (Joanna Cassidy) who just might be responsible for her competitors' mishaps. As you might expect in a film with gastronomic subject matter, toilet humor abounds: in fact, director Trent Cooper (The Comeback) might have set a new record for the use of flatulence sound effects in a single movie. Not recommended. [Note: DVD extras include the eight-minute featurette “Behind the Badge” on the titular star (a.k.a. Dan Whitney), and trailers. Bottom line: a paltry extras package for a lame comedy.] (E. Hulse)
