Mimic's first half goes to considerable jargon-ridden lengths to set up a cockamamie story about a plague carrying strain of insects who are eradicated when brilliant bug scientist Dr. Susan Taylor creates a new species to lure the aforementioned nasty critters to their doom. Called the "Judas" breed, Taylor's creations (supposedly sterile) somehow evolve in a three-year period to become HUGE COCKROACHES THAT DRESS UP IN OVERCOATS (I'm not joking) which live deep in the bowels of a built-over version of NYC's subway system, surfacing occasionally (nattily dressed) to snag a McHuman dinner. When Dr. Susan, her hubby, and a few other innocent bystanders dragged in for the evenly-spaced "Oh my God, they killed fill-in-the-blank" scenes, are trapped underground with only a bit of Mr. Wizard ingenuity, Horatio Alger pluck, and a copy of the Alien scripts to guide them, well...you know the rest. Very optional. (R. Pitman)[Blu-ray Review—Sept. 27, 2011—Lionsgate, 112 min., not rated, $19.99—Making its first appearance on Blu-ray, 1997's Mimic features a great transfer and a DTS-HD 7.1 soundtrack. Blu-ray extras on this newly released “director's cut” version include a brief video prologue with director Guillermo del Toro, audio commentary with del Toro, the production featurettes “Reclaiming Mimic” (15 min.), “A Leap in Evolution” on the creatures (10 min.), and “Back Into the Tunnels” (6 min.), storyboard animatics (6 min.), deleted scenes (5 min.), a gag reel (2 min.), a bonus digital copy of the film, and trailers. Bottom line: a sold Blu-ray debut for a so-so horror flick.]
